WHY ABSTINENCE

Why is Abstinence the Healthiest Choice?
  • Abstinence is the only 100% effective method that ensures teens will not have to deal with the physical, emotional, and social consequences of sexual activity. Condoms only offer risk reduction (see Condoms & STD information sheet) of the physical consequences, and don't even address the emotional and social consequences.
  • Sexually active girls are three times more likely to attempt suicide than non-sexually active girls; sexually active boys are eight times more likely to attempt suicide than
non-sexually active boys. -CDC, National Center for health Statistics, National Survey of Family Growth, 1995
  • When compared to women who began sexual activity in their early 20's, girls who initiated sexual activity at ages 13 or 14 were less than half as likely to be in stable marriages in their 30's. .-CDC, National Center for health Statistics, National Survey of Family Growth, 1995
  • Nearly 40 percent of girls who commence sexual activity at ages 13 or 14 give birth outside of marriage. .-CDC, National Center for health Statistics, National Survey of Family Growth, 1995
  • Virgin males and females take significantly fewer risks with substances and have fewer suspensions from school. -Pediatrics, Volume 87.2, February '91.
  • 62% of teens who have been sexually active regret getting started with sexual activity. -Roper Starch World Wide poll, in conjunction with SIECUS
