PREGNANCY: WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Each year nearly 1 million teens in the US become pregnant.
HOW DOES PREGNANCY AFFECT TEENS:
- 7 out of 10 adolescent mothers drop out of high school.
- Long-term wage earning power of adolescent fathers is greatly reduced
- Teenage sons of adolescent mothers are 2.7 times more likely to spend time in prison than the sons of mothers who delay child-bearing until their early 20s
- Teenage daughters of adolescent mothers are 50 percent
more likely to bear children out of wedlock
DATING NOTES:
- Dating someone exclusively for a long period of time is a
risk
- Dating someone more than one year older is a risk
According to a 1992 report published by Department of Health Services:
Men 20 and older father five times more births among junior high girls than do junior high boys.
Most of teen pregnancies are by men older than 20.
