CURRICULA IN USE
6th Grade Teen Aid:
Teen-Aid recognizes that teens need the freedom to learn ways to develop maturity and depth in their relationships with family and friends, without short-circuiting the maturation process with involvement in risk behaviors. Teen-Aid focuses on decision-making skills based on legal, moral, and ethical values, in line with authority and keeping future life goals in mind. The curriculum avoids explicit discussions of sexual behaviors. A healthy lifestyle of abstinence is promoted in positive, life-affirming ways. A "Parent Gram" section is available which includes take home activities that facilitate parent/child discussion about the topics being covered.

The Art of Loving Well is an anthology of 41 selected short stories, poems, essays, dramas, and folk tales from classical literature and contemporary teen literature. Developed at Boston University, this literature-based character education curriculum addresses the rich complexities, challenges, and joys of a wide variety of relationships, including friendships and family, infatuation and first romances, and enduring commitments and marriage. Writing assignments, role-playing ideas, discussion prompts, drawing, interviewing, and music projects accompany the stories. Readings from literature about love, intimacy and human sexuality that promote discussions about abstinence and character education are included. English teachers may use The Art of Loving Well as a main text, or integrate certain selections into their language arts classes. Teachers of health, family life or sex education classes supplement their courses with the stories and activities from the anthology.
