PREGNANCY: WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

Each year nearly one million teens in the US become pregnant.

WHY DOES IT MATTER IF I GET PREGNANT?

   •7 out of 10 teen mothers drop out of high school.
   •Long-term wage earning power of teen fathers is greatly reduced
   •Teenage sons of teen mothers are 2.7 times more likely to spend time in prison than the      sons of mothers who delay child-bearing until their early 20s
   •Teenage daughters of teen mothers are 50% more likely to bear children out of wedlock.

DATING: THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

   •Dating someone exclusively for a long period of time is a risk.
   •Dating someone more than one year older is a risk.

According to a 1992 report published by Department of Health Services:
Men 20 and older father five times more births among junior high girls than do junior high boys.

Most of teen pregnancies are by men older than 20
